    In addition to what has been said in the newsletter about old age and death, allow me to express my thoughts on the same topics.  Let me start by putting down here the lyrics of one of the songs I love.

                         I Did It My Way
And now, the end is near,                         I've lived a life that's full,
And so I face the final curtain;                 I've traveled each and every highway;
My friends, I'll say it clear,                        And more, much more than this,
I'll state my case of which I'm certain.
I did it my way.

                 Regrets?  I've had a few.
                            But then again, too few to mention;
                            I did what I had to do,
                            And saw it through without exemption.

                 Trala, lala, lala, lala, lala la la la
                            Trala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala la la la;
                            Trala, lala, lala, lala, lala, lala la la la,
                            Trala, lala, lala, I did it my way.

                 For what is a man, what has he got?
                             If not himself, then he has naught,
                             To say the things he truly feels,
                             And not the words of one who kneels,
                             The record shows I took the blows -
                             And did it my way!

What a song, what a song!  It is so insightful.  People, especially seniors like us could interpret it in many different ways. Some may see it depressing because it reminds them of the few years/months/days left for them on the face of the earth.  Others, however, may think of it as something that brings to mind the beautiful, wonderful life they have had, sprinkled with a few funny mishaps, probably.  Still others think of the song as a healthy reminder on getting ready to meet their Creator.

How do YOU perceive the song?

This is what I say:  According to Benjamin Franklin, "In this world nothing is certain but DEATH and TAXES."  There is truth in this axiom, so we prepare for tax time.  Now, why can't we prepare for death?  Preparing for death, though, is not staying in bed all day and all night waiting for it.  Neither does it mean quitting all the fun activities you are used to engage in, i.e., partying with friends, taking leisurely walks with your spouse, friend or neighbor; traveling; watching a funny movie; eating your favorite foods; drinking in moderation, unless your physician tells you not to; and even having a good night of fun in bed with your loved one.

On the positive side, to me preparing for death  means the following:

  • Have a written Advance Health Directives:  Is it your wish to be hooked up to tubes and machines to artificially prolong your life?  Or would you rather go in peace especially when your health condition is irreversible?
  • Have your financial papers in a safe location accessible to your loved ones.  Can your family locate them in case something happens to you?
  • Prepare your spouse for any eventuality.  Does your wife know what he/she should expect from your insurance companies?  Does he/she know how to take care of your property taxes?  Does he/she know your payables and receivables?
  • Make arrangements for your final resting place.  It sounds morbid, but I'll repeat what Pio Tupas said, "Talagang ganyan, una-una lamang tayo."  and let me add, "Doon ang tungo nating lahat."
  • Make amends with your family.  Is there a son/daughter/brother/sister who wronged you?  Would you forgive him/her now?  After all, it could have just been a misunderstanding.
  • Express your love for family and friends NOW.  When was the last time you said "I love you" to your daughter or son?  When was the last time you gave anyone a big hug?
  •  Have a good disposition.  Have you been nasty lately?  Grumpy, maybe?
             In the meantime, let us all be merry and try to be healthy.  Let us  all pick up a glass of wine,
     (San Miguel beer will do) and toast to good health and the best possible quality of life for all of us,
      with independence and dignity!
